The armored cars of the interwar era have a charm of their own: tall hulls, narrow wheels and shapes that still carry the spirit of the 1920s. The Laffly 80 AM is one of those types that appear in the modeling range only rarely, and Zebranomodel makes it available in the small 1:100 scale. The model builds quickly and fits into a collection beside tanks and half-track vehicles of the same era. The Laffly 80 AM belonged to the French armored cars built on a commercial truck chassis that received an armored hull and a turret. Machines like that came into being in the interwar period in relatively small numbers and were used above all for patrol and reconnaissance duty, often outside European territory, where their limited mobility off road was enough. The particular armament, the numbers built and the service of the individual batches differ in the specialist literature.
With armored cars it is the stance of the vehicle that decides how convincing it looks. All four wheels have to stand on one plane — once it is glued, set the model on glass and shim any rocking part until the glue has set. The wheels are easier to paint separately and are glued to the model at the very end; otherwise the tire is hard to separate from the fender. A tall smooth hull invites a uniform coat, but it is exactly there that a small modulation of the shade pays off, so that the surface does not look dead. A thin wash brings out the rivets and hatches, and a fine dry brush draws out the edges. A dusty underside and lightly soiled wheels give the impression that the vehicle has been driven somewhere.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
