The set is a ship model kit in 1:100 scale. Once finished it stands for a chaika, that is an open boat of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. The model is supplied unassembled and without a finish; it is built and painted by your own efforts. The particular contents of the package, the number of parts and the way the rigging is handled are given in the instructions enclosed with the kit.
The chaika was a long open boat with a low side, a single mast with a plain sail and a row of oars on both sides. Bundles of reeds or wicker were lashed along the sides, which gave the boat buoyancy and kept a wave from swamping her. She was built quickly and from commonly available timber, and her strength was not tonnage but a shallow draft and the ability to travel on a river as well as on open water. The combination of oars and sail allowed her to make way against the current and in a calm.
On a ship model the preparation of the surface decides more than the paint itself. Fill the seams of the hull with putty, sand them down with progressively finer paper and rid the surface of dust. On a smooth and completely dry base the finish lies evenly and no steps form on the edges. Apply the paint in thin coats and let each one dry properly. Only onto a cured finish can the deck be masked safely, otherwise paint runs under the covering tape and the edge bleeds. Take the masking off while the new coat is freshly dry, and pull it back at an angle over itself, not straight up. The timber of the decks comes out well with glazes and a light emphasis of the seams; the rigging is fitted only onto a finished paint job.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
