A decal sheet in the large 1:12 scale for the works Datsun 240Z from the Safari Rally of 1971.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Safari Rally was the toughest event of the calendar: thousands of kilometers of dusty roads, mud, river crossings and game on the route. The Japanese make had been sending cars here for many years, but the turning point came with the sharp Datsun 240Z coupe. An inline six-cylinder engine under a long hood, strengthened suspension, light guards and massive protection of the underside, and a car armed like that finished first in 1971, which was a fundamental calling card for Japanese motor sport.
A large scale is merciless to decals. The artwork is enlarged so much that every tooth in an outline and every inaccuracy in the registration shows, and the areas are at the same time so large that the film folds easily. On the other hand it is precisely here that the way the competition lettering was laid out on the car stands out, and a finished model has the force of a display-case piece.
Take large pieces up from under the water on a rigid backing and transfer them onto the model together with it, otherwise the film will fold into itself. Spread them out from the center to the edges with a soft brush, not with your fingers. Under decals that run over the edge of the hood put a little more water, so that enough time is left for straightening. Before you close the display case, wait at least a day with the overcoat, so that the moisture under the film has time to evaporate.
Before you set to work, photograph the sheet. With extensive sets it easily happens that a piece is transferred to the opposite side of the car, and without a record of the original layout it is then hard to trace where it actually belonged.
