This Top Studio set is an accessory to an already bought plastic kit in 1:12 scale. It replaces the simplified plastic treatment of the gear change, that is, the lever, the rod and its jointed ends, with a more faithful execution. It is not a model of the motorcycle or a substantial part of it; it is one particular assembly which catches the eye on a finished model, because it lies in an exposed part of the machine by the footpeg.
The Ducati Desmosedici is a factory prototype of the premier class of road racing with a V engine and a desmodromic valvetrain. The generations designated GP4 to GP9 cover the seasons from the middle of that decade to the end of its second half, that is, the transition from the 990 cc capacity rules to 800 cc. The shift linkage of these machines is a slender jointed assembly connecting the foot lever to the gearbox; on a model it comes to a few parts a millimeter in size.
A plastic kit usually molds the shift rod in one piece and in exaggerated thickness, because otherwise the part would break while being taken out of the mold. A detailing part makes it possible to keep the thickness to scale, to separate the jointed ends from the rod and to set the material apart by color, so that the assembly by the footpeg looks like a piece of small mechanics, not like a plastic molding.
Work over a tray with a raised edge, as the parts are so small that a dropped piece is hard to find. Fit them with tweezers and bond them with super glue applied with the tip of a toothpick and not straight from the bottle. Before painting, degrease the surface and use a base color; a dark steel or graphite paint with the edges lightly polished gives a good metallic look.
