About product

Hawker Sea Hawk FGA.6 in 1:144 scale from Miniwing

The kit captures the Hawker Sea Hawk in the FGA.6 version, that is, in the last combat form the Fleet Air Arm used of this type. The 1:144 scale makes the model a small display-case item, with which the result is decided mainly by a smooth surface, precise masking and cleanly applied decals.

The real subject

The Sea Hawk grew out of the Hawker P.1040 project and reached the units in the first half of the 1950s. It is a single-seat carrier-based aircraft with a straight folding wing, with air intakes in the wing roots and with a characteristically bifurcated exhaust, which vents through two jetpipes on the sides of the rear fuselage. This solution freed space in the fuselage for fuel and is apparent on the model at first glance. The power was provided by a Rolls-Royce Nene jet engine with a centrifugal compressor. The FGA.6 version was the fighter and ground-attack form with the most powerful variant of this engine and represents the last and most widespread combat form of the type with the Fleet Air Arm.

Building and painting tips

Begin with careful sanding of the fuselage joints, where the two halves and the bifurcated exhaust come together. Restore any engraving wiped away with a fine needle along a ruler. Paint the insides of the air intakes before you close the fuselage up. Spray the paint well thinned and in several thin coats, or it will clog the fine detail. The two-tone naval scheme calls for a precise dividing line, so use narrow tape for the masking and spray the edge with the lower color in advance, so nothing creeps under. Lay a gloss varnish down before the decals and unify the surface once they have dried. Leave the landing gear, the antennas and the gun muzzles until the end, as they are the most vulnerable.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of British carrier-based hardware of the 1950s
  • For modelers who enjoy building in 1:144 scale
  • For anyone interested in the development variants of one type in a collection
  • For a short project in which the quality of the painting decides

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The joints of the fuselage around the bifurcated exhaust and the dividing line of the two-tone scheme. Both are clearly visible in 1:144 scale and cannot be hidden.
