The pieces can be combined. The sibling patterns of this range are made in the same spirit, so the pink pieces can be alternated with another pattern to lay out a checkerboard, a band around the edge or a central figure. Before buying a second pattern, however, make sure the pieces are the same size, and sketch the layout on paper first, because once you start gluing it is hard to correct.
Layout according to the size of the model. Under a small figure a smaller number of large areas looks better, whereas on a more extensive scene regularly repeating tiles come out well. Try laying both out dry and photograph them; in a photograph a mismatch between the paving and the model shows much sooner than on the bench.
