Dual Exo 1B Robot White - an acrylic paint with a satin sheen

This is an acrylic modeling paint from AK Interactive, from the Dual Exo range. The white shade opens the range under the number 1B and the name Robot White. Once dry it leaves a satin, that is semi-gloss, surface.

The satin finish and what to expect from it

Satin is the middle degree of sheen between flat and gloss. It leaves a fine silky reflection that draws shapes and edges legibly but does not throw light back as sharply as gloss. The practical advantage is a smoother surface than flat: decals bed down on it better and silvering appears under them less often. The finished coat can also be overcoated with a matte or gloss clear and moved wherever you need it.

How to work with the acrylic

• It is applied with a brush and with an airbrush. For spraying, an acrylic is thinned with a thinner intended for acrylic paints, ideally from the same brand; for the exact ratio follow the data on the packaging.
• Shake the bottle thoroughly before use. The pigment in an acrylic settles at the bottom over time, and paint that has not been mixed gives an uneven tone.
• Lay on several thin coats rather than one heavy one. A thin coat holds better, does not flood the engraved lines and lets the surface texture of the part come through.
• On plastic, on resin and on photo-etched parts a primer first pays off. It evens out the base and markedly improves the grip of the coat.
• Let each coat dry properly before you overpaint or mask. Stick masking tape onto a cured coat and pull it off slowly.

Who the paint is for

The paint suits modelers who build plastic, resin and mixed-media models and want the degree of sheen under control from the paint itself rather than only from the final clear coat. The Dual Exo range is numbered in pairs with the letters A and B, and besides single bottles the manufacturer also combines a pair into one package. When combining it with other paints stay within one chemistry, that is acrylic with acrylic, and choose a clear coat compatible with acrylics.

Keep the paint out of the reach of children, in a closed bottle and away from frost. When spraying, work in a well-ventilated area and use respiratory protection. The manufacturer's instructions on the packaging always take precedence.
