Flowering meadow, late summer, a Model Scene grass mat

A Model Scene mat with the motif of a flowering meadow in late summer. It is not a kit or an object of a scene in its own right but a vegetation material to be applied: the growth and the flowers are finished on a carrier layer, and the modeler cuts them to the shape of the terrain and glues them onto the base. That does away with layering static grass and with the laborious placing of individual plants.

What is typical of late summer

A meadow at the end of summer is dense and well grown, but the saturated green is already beginning to pass into warmer, yellowish tones. It is precisely this transition that makes a scene believable: a purely green growth looks like spring, whereas late summer coloring suits dusty terrain, harvested fields and equipment with a film of dust on it.

How to work with the mat

• First lay it loosely on the terrain, draw round it and cut it out with a small margin.
• It is glued with a PVA (white) glue or a glue for scenery; weight the sheet down until it dries.
• Tear the edges and thin them out with your fingers, so that the growth passes into its surroundings without a visible line.
• Fluff the fibers up once dry and refine the transitions with scatter material or a dust pigment.

For builders of dioramas and vignettes, for model railways and for figure painters who want a quick but believable growth. Working with a mat is simple and forgives even a beginner's mistakes, because an area once glued down can be added to with tufts and scatter material.
