It is precisely the underslung pod that turns an otherwise inconspicuous business aircraft into an out-of-the-ordinary model — it is a detail that everyone notices in a display case.
The Learjet 36A is a variant derived from the type 35, in which part of the cabin space was given up in favor of a greater fuel load; the aircraft thereby gained longer range at the price of fewer seats. The layout stayed the same — a low-set wing, two jet engines on the sides of the rear fuselage and a high-mounted horizontal tail surface. The combination of range, speed and low operating costs made these machines a favorite tool of specialized operators: they fly long training tasks, tow targets and carry pods of equipment for which a far more expensive aircraft would otherwise have to take off.
Prepare and paint the underslung pod separately and glue it on at the end — otherwise it will be in your way both when masking and when handling the model. Glue the fuselage in sections, sand the joints and rescribe the engraving, and dry-fit the engine nacelles on the rear. On an aircraft with rear-mounted engines it pays to add weight to the nose before closing the fuselage, so that the finished model does not sit down on its tail. Mask the cockpit glazing and glue it in only after the surroundings have been painted. The smooth glossy finishes typical of this kind of aircraft call for a flawless base — a primer and a fine rub-down are a duty here, not a choice. Spray gloss varnish under the decals and unify the surface at the end.
