The set from Armory replaces the plastic main gear wheels on models of the B-29 Superfortress in 1:144 and matches the machines of the mid production series. The resin castings carry a finer tread and sidewall pattern than can be created in an injection mold on a part this small. The tire is cast with sag, so once finished the model really stands on the surface instead of looking as though it hovers above it. This is not an aircraft kit but an add-on part.
The B-29 Superfortress was an exceptionally advanced four-engined bomber for its day, with a pressurized cabin and remotely controlled defensive armament. It was among the heaviest production aircraft of the Second World War, which showed in the sturdiness of the landing gear and the size of the tires. Because the details of the wheels changed during production, the manufacturer offers separate sets for the individual production phases; choosing by the particular machine being depicted is therefore the right approach.
The castings are small, so work with tweezers and over a surface you can pick a part up from easily. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw, level the cut with sandpaper and check the contact patch against a flat board so that the model does not stand crooked. Wash the castings in warm water with dish soap before painting and let them dry thoroughly, or the paint will peel off the remains of mold release agent. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for plastic has no grip on resin. A tire looks more convincing in a dark gray shade than in pure black, above all in a small scale. The hub paints up well with a brush around the rim. A fine dusting of pigment to match the surface the model is to stand on works well at the end. Protect your airways when sanding resin.
This is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
