About product

CFM56-3 for the Boeing 737 Classic in 1:144 scale (LACI)

A resin accessory intended for building the second generation Boeing 737 in 1:144 scale. The set replaces the engine nacelle from a kit with a casting that captures the characteristic shape of the intake more faithfully. The accessory does not make up a model on its own.

The real subject

The CFM56-3 is a turbofan engine with a high bypass ratio, which in the 1980s replaced the older narrow JT8D on the 737 range. The difference is fundamental: whereas the older engine drove almost the whole flow of air through the core, on the CFM56 most of the thrust is made by the cold air passing around the core. The engine is therefore substantially more powerful and quieter, but also markedly thicker. On the 737 that opened up a problem which gave the whole range its unmistakable look: under the low-mounted wing and with a short landing gear there was no ground clearance left for a circular nacelle. The intake was therefore flattened underneath and the accessories of the engine moved to the sides. That flat underside of the intake is the most conspicuous feature of the 737 Classic and a modeler watches it first. The nacelle hangs on a pylon extended forward ahead of the leading edge of the wing.

Building and painting tips

Wash the mold release agent off the parts, and only then set about cutting. Take the casting remnants off at the intake ring in small steps, so the sharp edge on which the shape depends is not rounded off. Resin sands differently from plastic, it goes faster and the dust has to be extracted or sanded wet. Gluing only with super glue. Try the joint with the pylon dry beforehand; on a nacelle extended ahead of the wing, every deviation of angle shows when seen from the front. Paint the inside of the intake before you seat the part; once it is glued, no brush will get in there.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of civil aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the simplified shape of the nacelle in a kit
  • More experienced builders used to working with resin
  • Collections charting the development of the Boeing 737 range

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting for more experienced modelers. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Compared with the older engines the CFM56-3 has a much larger diameter, and under the low-mounted wing of the 737 there was no ground clearance left. The intake was therefore flattened underneath and the accessories moved to the sides.

It will not. The 737-200 range had older narrow engines with quite a different nacelle. A separate set is made for it.

The number of pieces is stated on the packaging of the set. Check the contents of the package before buying, therefore.

Wash the mold release agent off with warm water and dish soap, cut the pour blocks away with a saw, sand wet and try the seating on the pylon dry.
