About product

de Havilland Sea Venom FAW.21/22 In Combat Operations 1:144 — a Mark I kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British carrier-borne de Havilland Sea Venom in the FAW.21 and FAW.22 versions, in 1:144 scale from Mark I. The boxing is focused on machines in combat service. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the particular contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of decal schemes are stated on the box and in the instructions for the kit.

The real subject

The Sea Venom was the carrier-borne counterpart of the night and all-weather fighter Venom — a two-seat jet aircraft with a characteristic twin-boom tail, a short fuselage with radar in the nose and the crew seated side by side. For operation from aircraft carriers it received folding wings, strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook. It served with the Fleet Air Arm as an all-weather fighter and strike machine and was operated by other navies as well.

Building and painting tips

The twin-boom structure calls for careful alignment — glue the booms and the horizontal tail on a flat surface so that the model is not twisted, and let the joint harden thoroughly. The seams on the short fuselage are best sanded once dry, with fine paper and water. Mask the clear parts before spraying and apply the paint with an airbrush, thinned, in two passes; with dark naval camouflage it pays to use a lighter base so that the model does not go black at a small scale. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the postwar Fleet Air Arm in 1:144 scale
  • Anyone interested in carrier-borne jets and twin-boom designs
  • Modelers building a collection of Fleet Air Arm machines
  • Builders used to the small parts of a small scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They are successive carrier-borne all-weather versions of the Sea Venom, differing above all in the powerplant and the equipment. Which particular parts the package offers for both versions is given by the instructions for the kit.

The build is manageable, but the twin-boom structure and the small parts call for care. Glue on a flat surface so that the tail section is not twisted.

The contents of the package are stated on the box. Check against the figures there whether the package holds photo-etched parts or masks.
