About product

DH Mosquito B.IV, the Wooden Bomber, in 1:144 scale from Mark I

This is an unassembled and unpainted kit in injection-molded plastic released under the Mark I brand. The 1:144 scale is typical of collectors who want a whole range of types side by side in one display case and do not have meters of room for it. The finished model is therefore small, which puts all the more weight on clean seams and precise color edges.

The real subject

The de Havilland Mosquito Mk.IV was the bomber version of a twin-engine aircraft famous for its structure of plywood and wooden parts, which is where the nickname used on the box comes from. Power came from a pair of liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engines and the crew numbered two men. The bomber version carried no defensive gun armament and relied on high speed, ceiling and range. Its hallmarks are the slender, streamlined fuselage, the pair of engine nacelles and the simple single vertical tail.

Building and painting tips

At a small scale the preparation of the parts decides everything: cut the sprue gates off with a sharp knife or a photo-etched saw and sand the marks away so that they do not spoil the thin outlines. Glue with liquid cement for plastic drawn in by capillary action once the parts are seated, and use it really sparingly. Fill the seams with putty and sand them with fine paper. Before painting, lay down a thin coat of primer, which evens out the surface and reveals any remaining scratches. Spray the paints with an airbrush in light coats; with two-color camouflage schemes masking putty or thin tape helps. Prepare a gloss coat under the decals and seal them with a matte or semi-gloss finish once dry.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the 1:144 scale who build complete collections of Second World War aircraft.
  • Modelers who prefer a smaller amount of work than large scales demand.
  • Anyone interested in British technology and in the unusual wooden airframe structure.
  • Modelers with at least basic experience of small parts and an airbrush.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a classic injection-molded plastic kit that you assemble and paint yourself. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

The extent is given in the assembly instructions enclosed in the box.

The model is small, so there tend to be fewer parts, but at the same time they are tiny and hard to hold. We recommend at least basic experience with a sharp knife, tweezers and liquid cement.

Thin liquid cement for polystyrene applied by capillary action. Cyanoacrylate is unnecessary here and the position of the part is harder to correct with it.
