About product

What the sheet contains

The national insignia of the Dutch Air Force in 1:144 scale. The name gives two sets, so it will do for two models, or you have a replacement straight away if one insignia is damaged. The insignia are not tied to one kit or one type of aircraft; they suit anywhere you need the correct marking and the kit does not have it or its printing is inaccurate.

Working with decals in a small scale

In 1:144 scale the individual insignia are really tiny, so it pays to have fine-tipped tweezers, a dish of clean water and a soft cloth ready. Decals are applied to a smooth gloss surface: a matte varnish holds air under the film and a silvery edge then stays around the insignia. First cut the insignia out with the paper around it, dip it for only a few seconds and let it soften out of the water until it can be moved. Once it is in place, blot the surplus water away and let it dry thoroughly. A decal softener will help the insignia settle into a panel line or onto a curved surface, but it is applied carefully and nothing is moved after that. Finally overcoat the model so that the edges of the film are hidden.

Who it is for

The sheet will be used by builders of transport as well as military aircraft in small scales who want to add to or replace the markings of the Dutch Air Force. It also helps where a kit offers only one color version and you want to build the aircraft in a different finish, and equally when repairing an older model whose insignia have yellowed or been damaged.

Before you dip the sheet

Check the instructions to see whether it is not a self-adhesive version. A self-adhesive film that has been dipped is ruined beyond repair, whereas a wet decal can be dipped at any time later.

The model, paints, varnishes and decal softener are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name gives two sets. It will therefore do for two models, or it serves as a spare if an insignia is damaged while being applied.

They are not tied to one kit. You can use them on any model in 1:144 scale on which you need Dutch markings.

The usual procedure is the wet one: cut the insignia out, dip it briefly, let it soften, transfer it onto a smooth gloss surface, settle it and let it dry. Before you dip the sheet, check the instructions to see whether it is not a self-adhesive version, because a self-adhesive film that has been dipped is ruined.

On a matte layer air stays under the film and a silvery edge appears around the insignia. The final varnish hides the edges of the film and unifies the sheen of the whole model.
