A clear cockpit canopy vacuum-formed over a mold from thin transparent film. Compared with the injected part from the box it has a much smaller wall thickness, is more transparent and has neither a parting seam nor a gate mark. On a model as small as a Starfighter in 1:144 scale you will notice it at once: the cockpit stops looking like an opaque bubble and the inside can be seen through it. The set is cut for the Revell kit, because the shape of the canopy differs between individual kits of the same aircraft. The same manufacturer also makes a version formed for the Platz and F-Toys kit, so check which kit you are building when ordering.
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American supersonic fighter with an extremely slender fuselage and short, thin trapezoidal wings. The F-104G version was the multirole variant intended for European operators and became the most widespread of the whole family. It is precisely the combination of a long narrow fuselage and tiny wings that gave the aircraft a nickname referring more to a rocket than to a classic fighter. Its cockpit canopy is fairly long and meets the fuselage in one smooth line.
A vacuum-formed part is not broken out but cut out. Mark the outline with a thin marker, run a new scalpel blade lightly around the perimeter several times and break the part out. Sand the excess on fine sandpaper laid on a flat board until the edge seats along its whole length. Polish the matte surface left by sanding with polishing paste or with sponges of decreasing grit. It is bonded with a colorless PVA glue for canopies, which dries clear, whereas super glue risks fogging. Mask the frames with thin tape and apply the paint in several weak coats.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and masking material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
