A vacuum-formed clear canopy for a model of the Blanik glider in 1:144 scale from the Czech manufacturer Mark I. The thin-walled molding in clear film replaces the thick-walled injection-molded part: it looks more delicate, lets through markedly more light and opens up the possibility of displaying the model with the canopy swung open, which is practically impossible with a thick plastic part. The Let L-13 Blanik is a two-seat all-metal glider built in Kunovice from the late 1950s. Thanks to its rugged construction and undemanding handling it became one of the most widespread gliders in the world and flew generations through basic and advanced training; the TZ-13 designation goes with the military use of the type. Visually the type is defined by the long glazed canopy over the tandem seats — it is precisely this area that decides whether a model reads convincingly or not.
On no account trim the molding with a knife close to the part — the thin wall will crack. Cut it from the backing with a margin and then sand the surplus rim down on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, with a circular motion and without pressure, until you reach the parting line exactly, that is the edge where the formed surface passes into the flat backing. Work a little at a time and keep trying the fit dry; you can always take more off, but not put it back. Glue with a glue that dries clear — neither cyanoacrylate nor thin cement for plastic suits clear parts, because they fog the surface and the fumes leave a white veil. Before gluing it pays to polish the canopy with the finest abrasive and go over it with a gloss varnish; the framing is easiest to mask with narrow strips of tape and spray separately.
This is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
