About product

Mistel 5 in 1:144 scale from Brengun

This set from the Czech manufacturer Brengun captures the composite designated Mistel 5, that is a pair of aircraft joined into a single unit. According to the name the package includes both parts: the upper Heinkel He 162 A fighter and the lower unmanned Arado E.377 carrier. The 1:144 scale makes it possible to display the whole composite even on an ordinary shelf, which tends to be a problem in larger scales. The kit comes from a range in which Brengun builds on castings supplemented by photo-etched parts; the exact make-up of the package is not stated in the name.

The real subject

The Mistel concept joined a piloted aircraft mounted on top with an unmanned machine beneath it. The pilot of the upper aircraft brought the whole composite to the target, released the lower part and returned alone. The Mistel 5 variant had the jet-powered Heinkel He 162 A with a BMW 003 engine as the upper machine, and the Arado E.377 in the version with its own jet power, also BMW 003, as the lower part. The combination therefore gave an entirely jet-powered composite. The project stayed at the development stage and this variant never saw combat.

Building and painting tips

The crucial thing is mating the two parts: test fit the connecting struts dry and only then glue them, or the upper aircraft will sit crooked and the error shows at once on a composite. Wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand them with respiratory protection; glue them with cyanoacrylate. Paint the two parts separately and join them only once they are dry, as access to the space between them is otherwise minimal. Apply the decals to a glossy base with a softener and unify the surface with a matte varnish at the end.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of projects and prototypes from the end of the Second World War
  • For modelers who collect aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • For builders drawn to unusual combinations and aircraft composites
  • For more experienced modelers who do not mind working with small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, according to the name both parts of the composite are in the package, that is the Heinkel He 162 A and the Arado E.377.

It is a German concept for a composite of two machines, in which a piloted aircraft mounted on top brought the unmanned machine below it to the target and then released it.

The main difficulty is mating the two parts accurately. We recommend painting both parts separately and joining them only at the end, after a dry test fit.
