Pratt and Whitney JT8D-7/9/11 for the DC-9 is a resin accessory in 1:144 scale — a more accurate replacement for the engine nacelle on a model of this airliner. It is not a kit of the aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory set cast from modeling resin, intended as a more accurate replacement for the engine and the nacelle on a model of the Douglas DC-9 airliner in 1:144 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft or a complete kit — it deals only with the powerplant and counts on a base kit of the airframe. The designation covers a group of related forms of the engine that match each other externally closely enough for the manufacturer to offer them in one set. On a twin-engine aircraft the difference between one engine and a pair is essential, so check the number of pieces on the packaging of the set.
The JT8D is a turbofan engine with a low bypass ratio, which became one of the most widespread powerplants of the airliners of its era. On the DC-9 two such engines are slung in nacelles at the sides of the rear fuselage, which is characteristic of this aircraft — the wing thus stays clean and the tail surfaces are arranged in a T. It is precisely the rear mounting of the engines that makes the nacelles one of the most conspicuous elements of the silhouette, and inaccuracies in their shape are clearly visible on a finished model. The individual forms of the range differed mainly in thrust; the external shape stayed close.
First wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry — residue of the mold release agent is the most frequent cause of poor paint adhesion. Do not break the casting remnants and pour blocks off, cut them away with a fine-toothed saw and level the surface with a file or with wet sanding paper. Resin goes faster under an abrasive than plastic and its dust must not be inhaled, so work wet or with respiratory protection. It is glued exclusively with super glue; polystyrene cement does not attack resin. With engines mounted on the fuselage it is essential that both nacelles sit at the same angle and height — do a dry fit, compare the two sides from the tail and only then glue. Apply a primer before painting; without one, smooth resin distorts the shade.
This is a resin accessory, not a model of an aircraft. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
