Ten wooden strips of square section 2 x 2 mm and one meter long. The wood is dark, almost black, listed under the name Manzonia. The material belongs to the equipment of builders of wooden ship models, where the strips are used for parts that are meant to stand out against a light hull by contrast.
A square section of 2 x 2 mm is typical of rims and edging, railing stanchions, struts, hatch frames and small infills; from the longer pieces you can also make yards or parts of the internal framework. Dark wood is used in ship modeling where the real subject carried a stained or tarred wooden element, so the difference against light planking does not have to be painted in.
Cut the strips with a sharp blade against a metal rule or with a fine saw, and sand the cut so that the joint beds down tightly. For curves the strip is bent after dampening in warm water or over steam; hold the shape with clothespins until the wood dries. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and the surplus should be wiped off with a damp cloth at once. Sand the finished surface with fine paper along the grain; oil or varnish brings out the figure of the wood, while stain makes little sense on a dark species. Store the strips lying flat so that they stay straight.
Glue, varnish and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
