About product

The paratrooper helmet M38 (Fallschirmjäger) in 1:16 scale

An accessory for a figure in the large 1:16 scale. It contains the helmet on its own, for fitting onto a figure's head or for laying loose into a diorama. It is neither a model nor a figure but a small part with which you change a figure's headgear or add set-aside equipment to a scene.

The real subject

The M38 helmet is the paratrooper variant of the German steel helmet. It differs from the infantry type in its shortened shell with no protruding rim over the nape and the ears, so that it does not get in the way during a jump and while moving in a confined space. A more elaborate internal cushioning system and a multi-point chin strap, which held the helmet more firmly on the head, went with it. The shape is unmistakable and determines a figure's allegiance to the airborne troops at once.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Cut the casting residue off with a fine saw, sand the surface level and wash the part in lukewarm water with a detergent. Once dry, glue with super glue; with a larger mating surface reach for a gel variant, which allows the part to be aligned for a while. A primer follows. While painting in 1:16 scale, do not be sparing with shades: the shell, the straps of the chin strap and the inner liner should each have a tone of their own. A wash will accentuate the transition of the shell into the rim and a dry brush will draw the edges out. If you plan a cover or netting, count on it being extra work with your own material, as the casting is smooth. Close with a matte varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of 1:16 figures of the period of the Second World War
  • Conversions where an infantry helmet needs replacing with a paratrooper one
  • Dioramas with set-aside equipment, where a helmet lies away from a figure
  • Modelers who want to practice painting metal, leather and straps

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Glue, paints and the figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not; it is the helmet alone as an accessory for a figure. You obtain the figure separately.

It has a shorter shell with no protruding rim over the nape and the ears and a more elaborate attachment on the head. The silhouette is therefore distinctly different.

Sand the mating surface down so that it sits on the crown, and bond it with a gel super glue. Fill the gap with a modeling compound and sand it over once dry.

Yes. On a smooth surface paint holds badly without a base coat and rubs off during handling.
