The Tiger I was a heavy tank with an 88 mm gun, a boxy hull and interleaved road wheels; the vertical surfaces of its turret and side plates are ideal for markings. In 1:16 scale the model is large, so the decals have noticeable dimensions and their edges show at a normal look into a display case. The quality of application therefore decides the result more than in small scales.
With large decals on a broken-up surface it pays to work with decal softeners. They work in two steps. The preparatory solution is applied to the base before the decal is laid down and improves adhesion; the stronger softener is brushed on only once the decal is in place. The decal then softens, wrinkles and once dry beds even into engraved lines, onto welds and over edges. Do not touch the decal while it is softening, or it will tear. If a bubble is left, prick it with the tip of a scalpel and apply the softener again. On the broad surface of a 1:16 model, work section by section so that you always have the decal under control.
