The Sd.Kfz. 251 was a German half-track armored personnel carrier of the Second World War. At the front it had a pair of steerable wheels, at the rear a tracked chassis, and it was just this combination that gave it its characteristic appearance. The front wheels are unmissable on a model and their rendering noticeably influences the overall impression, doubly so in a large scale.
Replacement front wheels in 1:16 with an off-road tread to Fulda tires, that is with a pattern meant for a soft surface. The set is cut for Sd.Kfz. 251 kits from Das Werk and replaces the wheels from their sprues. If the parts are not of polystyrene, ordinary cement for plastic kits has no effect on them and the joint is made with super glue.
Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so that the shape of the sidewall is preserved. Wash and degrease the wheels before painting. A tire never looks good in pure black; a dark gray base with the raised parts of the tread finely lightened is more convincing. Then rub a pigment in the color of the soil the vehicle drove over into the pattern, and paint the rim separately, before you seat the wheel on the axle.
For builders of large models of the half-track who want wheels more credible than those in the base kit. At 1:16 the tread pattern and the shape of the sidewall are visible at first glance, so work on this small thing pays off more than in small scales. The kit, paints, pigments and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
