An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet SU-100 tank destroyer in the large scale of 1:16 from Trumpeter. A scale of 1:16 means an exceptionally large and detailed model: the finished piece is big and the build ranks among the more demanding projects. The set holds a great many parts, and photo-etched parts and metal items are added to the plastic (a cable and a small spring, for example). Its extent and detail make it a flagship model for the cabinet, for experienced builders.
The SU-100 was a Soviet tank destroyer committed at the close of the Second World War. It came about in 1944 by development from the SU-85 and built on the proven chassis of the T-34-85 tank. Its main weapon was a powerful 100 mm gun, which could deal even with the heavier German tanks at long range. The turretless layout with a fixed casemate gave the vehicle a low silhouette and a massive frontal weapon; the SU-100 served in many armies long after the war.
Glue the plastic parts with thin modeling cement for plastic, and the photo-etched and metal parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). On a vehicle at this scale it pays to work in sections: first finish and paint the running gear and the interior of the fighting compartment, and only then close the hull up, because once it is assembled you can no longer get inside. Apply a primer before painting and spray the shades with an airbrush. At the end, bring the model to life with weathering: washes will bring out the rivets and the engraved lines, while pigments and earth will create convincing dust and mud effects on the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
