About product

The real subject

The German PzKpfw VI Tiger I heavy tank carried a gun of 88 mm caliber in the KwK 36 guise. The figure L/56 after its designation is not the caliber but the length of the barrel expressed in multiples of the caliber. The secondary armament consisted of MG-34 machine guns, one coaxial with the gun and the other in the front plate of the hull. The muzzle brake and the gun mantlet changed during series production, and it is precisely by them that the individual guises of the Tiger are told apart.

What the set contains

The set is listed as turned barrels and aims at the early guise of the machine: the barrel of the KwK 36 gun with the early muzzle brake and the barrels of the MG-34 machine guns. According to the name it is meant for the variant with the standard gun mantlet. The gun mantlets themselves are offered in the same range as a separate item with three shape variants, while a sister set covers the late muzzle brake.

Building and painting tips

The turned part replaces the plastic barrel from a kit. It has a smooth cylindrical surface, so there is none of the sanding away of the lengthwise traces of manufacture that a plastic barrel tends to have and that are hard to level on a thin cylinder. Try the mounting dry; the opening in the mantlet usually needs enlarging slightly with a round file. The parts are not made of polystyrene and cement for plastic has no effect on them; make the joint with cyanoacrylate glue and apply it in a small amount, so that it does not wick onto a visible surface. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.

  • turned barrels for the Tiger I in 1:72 scale
  • the KwK 36 gun of 88 mm caliber, barrel length L/56
  • the early guise of the muzzle brake
  • the barrels of the MG-34 machine guns
  • meant for the variant with the standard gun mantlet

FAQ

It is the length of the barrel expressed in multiples of the caliber, not the caliber itself. The caliber of the KwK 36 gun is 88 mm.

The name gives the mantlet only as an indication of the variant. Gun mantlets in this range are sold as a separate item with three shape variants.

With cyanoacrylate glue in a small amount. The parts are not made of polystyrene, so modeling cement for plastic has no effect on them.

A particular kit is not stated here. The set is listed in 1:72 scale for the Tiger I in its early guise, so try the mounting dry.
