About product

The real subject

The CSS Chicora was a casemate ironclad of the navy of the Confederate States. She was built in Charleston and entered service in 1862. Her form was determined by a casemate with sloping armored walls, from which the guns fired; the sloping walls presented shot with an unfavorable angle and the low freeboard left as small a target as possible above the water. The bow was adapted for a ram strike, that is, for an attack on the hull of an enemy ship. The Chicora belonged to the vessels that defended Charleston harbor against the Union blockade, and she remained in service until the evacuation of the city in 1865, when her own crew sank her. The years in the designation correspond to the time of her active service.

The model in 1:700 scale

The 1:700 scale is a small one for ships and it is popular precisely for that reason: the model takes up little room on a shelf and in time a whole squadron can be added to it in the same key. It suits an ironclad with a low silhouette, because its characteristic flat shape stands out even in a small size. Watch for level seating of the casemate on the hull and for the symmetry of the gun ports, as a small scale will not forgive a deviation.

Building and painting tips

Wash and degrease the parts before gluing, cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder down with fine abrasive paper. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts, and the particular procedure is given in the maker's instructions. In a small scale it holds that less is more: a thin wash will draw the relief out, while exaggerated dirtying will instead overwhelm the model. The armored surfaces will take a darker shade with restrained accentuation of the edges, and a wooden deck suits a warmer tone.

Who it is for

For collectors of ships of the American Civil War and for modelers who build in 1:700 scale and are looking for something other than modern combat vessels for a display case. It will also serve as the basis of a small water scene on a board. Paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
