What the Ripper shape is for

Neither a straight nor a curved blade deals well with the situation where the material is not meant to be cut through in one pass but gradually scored and broken away. The Ripper shape is made for exactly that work and it cuts on the pull stroke, not by pushing away from you. It comes into its own when dividing plastic profiles and sheet, where the groove is deepened several times and the material is then snapped along the scored line, and when removing thicker remnants of material where a straight blade would slip. Because the work is done on the pull, the modeler has better control over the force and the tool cannot shoot forward once the cut is through.

Use

• Take the cut toward you, but never across the hand holding the part.
• Deepen the groove with several light passes instead of one heavy one.
• Snap the material along the scored line and then level the edge with a file or abrasive paper.
• Change the blade as soon as it stops biting; a blunt edge calls for more force and slips more easily.
• Work on a cutting mat and never use the blade as a lever.
