An injection-molded plastic kit of a Formula 1 single-seater in 1:20 scale from the Japanese maker Tamiya. The model represents the Lotus Type 79 of the 1978 season in the iconic black and gold John Player Special livery. The box holds parts in hard plastic, decals and assembly instructions; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Lotus Type 79 is among the most important cars in the history of Formula 1. It was the first single-seater able to exploit ground effect to the full, the downforce generated by low pressure beneath the car: profiled sidepods with side skirts formed a tunnel through which air flowed and sucked the car onto the track without the drag penalty of wings. That gave the Type 79 a marked advantage in the corners. It was powered by the proven Ford Cosworth DFV V8. In the 1978 season Mario Andretti took the world championship title with it, and his team mate was Ronnie Peterson.
Use liquid cement for plastic on the plastic joints. It pays to paint the detailed suspension, the monocoque and the Cosworth DFV engine before the final assembly. For the deep black bodywork the ideal is airbrushing over a primer followed by a gloss clear coat, which prepares a smooth base for the decals and gives the finish depth. Apply the gold lines and markings patiently from the decals supplied. Wheels, tires and polished metal fittings will sharpen the realistic look.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
