Art Scale 1:32 Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (Frank), part 3 — Imperial Japanese Army Air Force is a sheet of waterslide decals for a kit of this Japanese fighter. These are supplementary markings, not a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:32 scale for a plastic kit of the Japanese fighter Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate, listed by the Allies under the code name Frank. The third part of the Art Scale series is devoted to machines of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The package contains markings only — the kit, the paints and the glue are not included.
The Ki-84 Hayate was among the highest-performing Japanese fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by the air-cooled Nakajima Ha-45 radial engine and, compared with the older types, brought a substantially better rate of climb and speed while keeping respectable maneuverability. The armament consisted of a combination of cannons and machine guns in the fuselage and the wings. Unlike the types of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, the Ki-84 served with army units, and that feeds through into the marking system: differently handled tactical numbers, unit bands and the form of the insignia on the fuselage and the wings.
The base under the decals has to be smooth and glossy, or a silvery edge will appear around the artwork. Cut the artwork out close to the printing, dip it briefly in lukewarm water and let it rest until the film starts to slide freely on the paper. Japanese schemes often combine large areas of marking across engraved lines and camouflage transitions — there a decal softener applied in small sections pays off. Finally coat with a matte or semi-gloss clear varnish, which unifies the edges of the film with the surface.
