A set of masks for a model, not a kit and not paint. Masking sets for military equipment deal with two things during painting. First, they protect the surfaces where paint does not belong: the cab glazing, the windows and the lenses of the optics, the lights and the searchlights. Second, on multicolor schemes they run the boundary between shades so that it comes out sharp and repeatable. On the Husky the first job is the more important one: the vehicle has an unusually large glazed cab, which is its distinguishing mark, and paint that has crept under tape shows on it from every angle.
The Husky is a wheeled vehicle intended for detecting mines and booby traps during route clearance. Its design comes out of the South African school of mine protection and is built on an unusual idea: in an explosion the vehicle is meant to break up into modules that absorb the energy, while the armored cab with the crew stays whole and the machine can be put back together from spare parts. The Mk.III form carries detection panels spread out ahead of the vehicle, and it was also built with further search equipment. The high cab with its large windows gives the driver a view out and the modeler extra work.
The masks are stuck onto a dried primer coat, before the shade is painted. The base has to be clean and degreased. Lift the piece off with pointed tweezers, seat it and press the edges down carefully with a toothpick, or the paint will creep under. Spray at a right angle and in thin coats. Take the mask off while the paint is only tacky; the lip tears on a cured coat. Mask the clear parts before they are set into the body, while they can still be handled freely.
