This is not a kit but a set of masks for a model. Masking sets for military equipment deal with two things during painting. First, they cover the surfaces that are to stay clean: the driver's vision blocks, the windows and the lenses of the sighting optics, the lenses of the lights and the searchlights. Second, on multicolor schemes they are used so that the transition between two shades of camouflage comes out repeatably and with the same shape on both sides of the vehicle, which freehand never quite succeeds.
The 9K114 Shturm-S is a Soviet anti-tank missile system in its ground form. The launch vehicle, designated 9P149, was created on the chassis of the MT-LB armored tracked carrier, which gave it good cross-country mobility and a low silhouette. The launcher folds down into a position protected by the hull while on the move and is raised above the superstructure to fire. The combination of the tracked chassis, the folding launcher and the densely occupied front of the hull makes the vehicle a rewarding model, and at the same time a model with a great many small vision blocks and optics that have to be covered reliably during painting.
The masks are stuck onto a perfectly dried primer coat and before the actual painting. The base has to be clean and free of dust; lift the piece off with pointed tweezers, seat it and press the edges down carefully with a toothpick, so that no paint creeps under them. Spray in thin coats at a right angle to the mask, not at an angle under its edge. Take the mask off while the paint is only tacky; the lip tears on a fully cured coat. Remove any adhesive residue left after the mask with alcohol on a cotton swab, carefully and only where needed.
