A pre-cut self-adhesive mask from Art Scale for a model of the MiG-29 fighter in the 9-12 form in 1:72 scale. According to the name it is a single-sided set, which in addition holds a mask made of a flexible rubber material. The set is cut to measure for one particular kit. The target kit is Great Wall Hobby.
In 1:72 scale the whole canopy is barely a couple of centimeters long and the individual frames are as thin as a hair. Cutting strips by hand at this size is thankless work: the strip ripples as you cut it, bends as you stick it down and the resulting line never comes out straight. A pre-cut mask gets around this problem, but it makes demands on handling. Work over a light-colored surface, lift the parts with the tip of a sharp knife pushed into the edge and move them with fine-tipped tweezers. Never press a part in the middle, because a crease in the film will not straighten out again and will show under the paint as a stripe.
Degrease the clear part in lukewarm water with dish soap and let it dry. Let the parts seat dry, check the position and only then press them down with a toothpick around the perimeter. Apply the paint really thinly, because in a small scale even a slightly heavier coat builds a ridge at the edge that looks oversized. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, at a shallow angle backward. The flexible mask made of rubber material differs from ordinary film in that it can be stretched into shape, so it can be used on curved surfaces as well.
