A kit of the Mi-17 transport helicopter in 1:48 scale from Anetra, released as a limited edition with a focus on the machines of the Hungarian Air Force. The 1:48 scale is rewarding on a helicopter of this size: the model has room enough for detail in the cabin and for fine work on the landing gear and the rotor head, while still fitting into an ordinary display case.
The Mi-17 is the export designation of the Soviet and later Russian transport helicopter known at home as the Mi-8MT. Compared with the older Mi-8T it received more powerful TV3-117 turboshaft engines, shorter engine nacelles and the tail rotor moved to the other side of the tail boom; it is precisely the position of the tail rotor that is the quickest way to tell the two families apart. The machine is used to carry troops and cargo, to evacuate casualties and in an armed configuration with weapon racks. The Hungarian Air Force took the Mi-17 into service at the close of the 1980s and operated it for transport and support tasks; after the country joined NATO, new designations and color schemes appeared on the machines as well.
Build a helicopter from the bottom up: finish and paint the cargo cabin and the pilots' station first, and only then close up the fuselage. The glazing of the Mi-17 is extensive and broken up, so it pays to mask the frames with tape or a ready-made mask and to paint them only after the inside has been sprayed. Leave the rotor head for the end and paint the rotor blades separately. Green and gray-green camouflage comes out best when you lighten it by adding a lighter shade into the centers of the panels and then unify it with a thin filter. The exhaust areas and the underside of the fuselage will take careful weathering with pigments.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
