A set of acrylic paints built around one color theme, which according to the name is orange and fire. An acrylic binder means thinning and cleaning with water. Themed sets make sense precisely with saturated colors: the shades in them follow on from one another, so you can put a transition together from them straight away, something that would be hard to assemble from randomly chosen bottles.

Fire is painted with a transition, not with one color

A fiery effect on a figure or on a base does not come about by painting the area orange. It comes about through the order: the darkest tone underneath, orange in the middle and the lightest core in the place where the light source is meant to be. Only this gradient is read by the eye as a flame. The same procedure is used for the reflected glow on the surrounding surfaces, that is, for the effect known as object source lighting.

Use

• Shake before use, as saturated pigments settle to the bottom
• Orange and yellow cover less well, so reckon with more thin coats
• Choose a light base, as warm shades get lost on a black primer
• Build the transition from dark to light and leave the core of the flame until the end
• Keep the glow on the surrounding surfaces restrained, as an overdone one looks unconvincing
