About product

Landing flaps for the Douglas DC-8 series 30 in 1:144 scale

This is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory that is built into a kit. Plastic kits of airliners usually mold the wing in one piece and with the flaps in the retracted position, because a mold does not allow any other variant. This set replaces that part of the trailing edge and offers it in the extended form, that is, exactly as the aircraft looks on approach to landing. The model thereby gains movement and depth, which a static silhouette lacks, and on a shelf it stands out at once from a kit built out of the box.

The real subject

The Douglas DC-8, together with the Boeing 707, belonged to the first generation of jet airliners. The series 30 was the long-range version intended for route flights across the ocean: it received Pratt and Whitney JT4A turbojet engines, a strengthened structure and a greater fuel supply. The wing of the DC-8 had extensive trailing-edge high-lift devices, without which the aircraft could not have got onto ordinary runways with the performance of the time, and it is precisely those that are practically invisible on a model in the retracted position.

Building and painting tips

The first step decides, that is, cutting the original flap section out of the plastic wing. Make the cut in two passes with a new blade, rather a little inside the outline, and take the remainder down with a file and sandpaper according to a dry test. Wash the resin parts of any mold release residue before gluing, otherwise the paint holds poorly. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue and fill and sand the joint until the transition disappears under matte varnish. Extended flaps also reveal the upper surface of the wing beneath them, which is worth spraying before you close the assembly.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of airliners who build classic jets in 1:144
  • Builders of display models in landing configuration
  • More experienced modelers who do not mind cutting into and filling a finished wing
  • Collectors who want to set a model apart from an ordinary build out of the box

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory for a kit of the Douglas DC-8 series 30 in 1:144 scale. You have to get the aircraft itself separately.

The original molded flap section is cut out of the plastic wing and the parts from the set are glued in its place. Make the cut with a margin, take it down with a file and then fill and sand the joint.

The set presupposes a steady hand when cutting into a finished part and basic experience of filling. We do not recommend it for a very first build.

Cyanoacrylate glue has proved itself for resin parts, because ordinary plastic cement does not hold on resin. Degrease and roughen the surfaces before gluing.
