Rolls-Royce RB211-22 engines of the late version with the reverser open in 1:144 scale make up an add-on set for builders who model a machine from later production.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set replaces the engine nacelles on a finished kit and shows the thrust reverser open. The aircraft kit is not included in the package. The brand keeps the early and the late version separately, so choosing the item is part of deciding which particular aircraft you are building, because on types with a long production run the small changes to the nacelles show up exactly like this.
The RB211 was a three-shaft turbofan engine from Rolls-Royce, and the RB211-22 version served on the wide-body three-engine Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. During service both the engine and its installation went through modifications, which is why modeling practice distinguishes an early and a late version. On turbofan engines of this class the thrust reverser works through a sliding section of the nacelle that uncovers the cascades turning the airflow forward.
Masking is a discipline of its own here. The nacelle usually has the front cowling done one way, the center section another and the surfaces uncovered by the reverser yet another, so plan the order of shades in advance and mask from the lightest to the darker ones. Use narrow masking tape on the curved surfaces and settle the pressure with a toothpick, so that the paint does not creep underneath. Finally, bring out the panel lines with a thin wash; even a discreet line makes a big difference on a uniform nacelle.
