The Kirby Kite came from the workshop of the British firm Slingsby, which was among the foremost European makers of gliders. The machine was created in the middle of the 1930s as a single-seat sporting and performance glider of wooden structure with fabric covering. Its most conspicuous feature is the cranked gull wing of large span, which gives the machine a characteristic silhouette.
