About product

The Fokker Dr.I in the colors of the Red Baron from the Atlantis brand

This kit from the American brand Atlantis covers probably the best known aircraft of the First World War, the Fokker Dr.I triplane in the bright red finish Manfred von Richthofen made famous. It is a stylized and simplified model, that is, not an accurate reduction for a scale display case but a model built rather on a striking silhouette and on the pleasure of building. The scale is not given in the name, so look for the size on the packaging.

The real subject

The Fokker Dr.I reached combat units at the close of 1917. Three flying surfaces one above the other gave it short wings, a small turning radius set by its span and an excellent rate of climb, for which it paid with a lower top speed than its monoplane rivals. It was powered by a rotary engine and carried a pair of synchronized machine guns. Its best known operator was Manfred von Richthofen, the commander of a fighter wing and the most successful fighter pilot of the war, whose red aircraft finish earned him the nickname the Red Baron. It is exactly the combination of an unmistakable shape and red color that makes this aircraft a rewarding subject for modelers of every level.

Building and painting tips

On a triplane the key point is to set the flying surfaces exactly one above the other and in line, and a dry assembly without glue and a check by eye from the front and from the side both help. A deep red shade often has weaker covering power, so it pays off to lay down a light base first and to spray the color in several thin layers. Finish the cockpit, the pilot's seat and the visible parts of the engine before you close the fuselage. The panel lines and recessed details are brought out by a dark wash, which you wipe away carefully once dry.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the aircraft of the First World War and in the figure of the Red Baron
  • Modelers looking for a quicker build with a striking result
  • Collectors of stylized and simplified models
  • Parents and children who want to start building models together

The model is supplied unassembled. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The scale is not given in the name and with stylized models it is commonly not stated. Look for the size on the packaging.

Manfred von Richthofen, a German fighter pilot of the First World War and the most successful fighter of that conflict. He got the nickname from the red finish of his aircraft.

Three flying surfaces one above the other. Thanks to them it was very maneuverable and climbed quickly, but in top speed it lagged behind its monoplane rivals.

Paints and glue are not included in the package. For the best result we recommend a light base under the red color and a dark wash to bring out the details.
