1:48 Mi-17 Hip-H Expert kabuki masks

The real subject

The Mi-17 is a twin-engine medium-class transport helicopter derived from the Mi-8 family, which carries the designation Hip in the NATO code. It carries cargo and troops alike, serves with dozens of armies and in civil service all over the world, and you will recognize it by its five-blade main rotor and extensively glazed forward section. It is that glazing that makes the most work when painting a model, because there are unusually many areas on it that are to stay clear.

What the set solves

Masks in kabuki paper cover the places that are not to receive paint. Kabuki paper is thin, holds its shape even on a bulged surface and can be removed after spraying without pulling the paint off underneath. Against masking tape it saves time and nerves, because there is no cutting of the shape directly on the model. The designation Expert sets the extent of the set apart within the range, which also offers a basic variant for the same machine. What exactly the set covers is given in the manufacturer's instructions.

How to use the masks

Apply the masks before spraying, onto a clean and dry surface. Press the edges down carefully, above all in the corners and on the curves, because that is exactly where paint creeps under. Spray in thin layers and let them become tacky, because a thick layer banks up at the edge of the mask and creates a step. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, not once it has fully cured, and peel it at an angle back over itself rather than straight up. Wipe any remains of adhesive off with alcohol.

Supply

The set contains masking templates. The model of the helicopter, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
