Landing gear bay masks for the Aichi B7A1 and B7A2 Ryusei (Grace) in 1:48 scale, cut to the openings in the lower surface of the wing.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks that cover the inside of the landing gear bays while the outer finish is sprayed. It covers both the B7A1 and the B7A2 variants given in the name.
Why it is worth the effort on this subject
The Ryusei was a large single-engine carrier machine with an inverted gull wing and its landing gear bays are sizable even in 1:48 scale. Cotton wool with crepe tape holds badly in an opening like that, the edge comes out frayed, and overspray into the bay then has to be touched up with a brush across the whole interior. A pre-cut mask rests on the outline of the opening and makes the edge at the first attempt.
The painting procedure
Spray and weather the inside of the bay before the wing is closed up, or right after it has been glued. Then insert the mask and spray the airframe. If you want to dirty the bay only at the end, leave the mask in place through the weathering of the outer surfaces as well and take it off right at the finish. Always let the paint under the mask harden for at least a day; fresh acrylic comes away with the mask.
The Aichi B7A Ryusei, designated Grace by the Allies, was a Japanese carrier attack aircraft able to carry a torpedo as well as bombs. It was built in small numbers only and practically never saw action from the decks of aircraft carriers.
