Dead Design 1:72 Kawasaki Ki-100 undercarriage bay paint masks is a set of masks for the landing gear bays of the Japanese Kawasaki Ki-100 fighter in 1:72 scale. It covers the bay opening, so that no camouflage paint is left inside while the airframe is sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
A landing gear bay has to be covered while the airframe is painted, otherwise the top varnish gets into it and the difference between the interior and the outside disappears. A pre-cut mask follows the outline of the opening in the wing, so cutting the shape out of tape falls away. In 1:72 the opening is only a few millimeters across and the bay is shallow, so the mask is tiny too and tweezers and good light are needed.
The most common problem is paint that creeps under the edge of the mask. Prevention is simple: once the mask is laid on, go over its whole edge with a wooden toothpick and direct the first coat perpendicularly from above, not at an angle into the opening. An angled stream of air from the airbrush presses under the edge and lifts it. If a bleed does arise, scrape it away once it has dried with a sharpened stick or a toothpick, which will not scratch the plastic, and level the edge. Touching up with a brush pays off only exceptionally in this scale; the brush mark tends to be more conspicuous than the original bleed.
The Kawasaki Ki-100 came about by installing a radial engine in an airframe derived from the Ki-61 fighter, in place of the original inverted V12. The reason was difficulty with the supply of the inverted V12 engines. The resulting machine therefore had a characteristically short cowling with a large frontal area, but the wing and the main landing gear stayed close to its predecessor.
