About product

Instrument panel for the Spitfire Mk.IXc late and Mk.XVI in 1:24 scale

This is a finished accessory for the cockpit, not a kit and not a photo-etched set to be painted. The panel is pre-printed and in relief: the dial faces, the scales and the lettering are finished and it is fitted in place of the plastic part from the kit. The hand drawing of the individual instruments, which in 1:24 scale can easily take a whole evening and is easily spoiled, falls away completely with it.

Why not just a decal

A decal will give color, but it stays flat and on shaped plastic it is harder to work with. A photo-etched set will give depth, but it has to be put together and painted. A finished panel goes round both: you get a single part, which is tried dry and fitted. In a large scale, where the cockpit is open and clearly visible, the effect is immediate.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX in its late form with the C type wing was among the most widespread Allied fighters of the closing phase of the Second World War. The Mk.XVI version was essentially an identical aircraft powered by a Packard Merlin engine produced under license in the United States; late machines of both versions had the same arrangement of the instrument panel, which is why the manufacturer covers them together. It is exactly this combination that matters to a modeler: the early and the late Mk.IX cockpits differ from one another.

Fitting it into the cockpit

Cut the plastic instrument panel part out of the kit or sand it down flat, and try the new panel dry for as long as it takes to seat in the right place and at the right height. It is glued with a pinch of cyanoacrylate applied round the edge with the tip of a toothpick. Dose the glue sparingly: its fumes are able to fog glazed surfaces, the canopy included. Before closing the cockpit, let everything air out and cure properly.

Who the instrument panel is for

  • Builders of Spitfires in the large 1:24 scale
  • Modelers building the late Mk.IXc or the Mk.XVI
  • Those who want a convincing cockpit without painting the instruments
  • Beginners: the work is easier than putting a photo-etched set together

FAQ

Yes. The manufacturer keeps the early and the late form apart, because the arrangement of the instruments differs between them.

It is not. It is pre-printed and is fitted straight in.

Essentially a Mk.IX with a Packard Merlin engine produced under license in the United States. The cockpit of late machines corresponds to the late Mk.IXc.

Remove the plastic part from the kit, try the new panel dry and finally glue it on with a small amount of cyanoacrylate.
