1:24 21 inch Prior Design PD3 Forged

Prior Design is a German workshop that made its name on wide fender extensions and aggressive aerodynamic sets for luxury coupes and off-road vehicles. It offers wheels of its own for its conversions as well, and the designation PD3 belongs to its forged designs. Twenty-one inches works out in 1:24 scale to a rim with a diameter of around 22.2 millimeters.

Why a forged wheel is drawn differently

A forged barrel will bear thinner arms than a casting, because the material is stronger after forming. Designers make use of that and draw the spokes out as far as the edge, where they finish them with a crisp line. On a model that shows in two ways. First, there is far more free space between the arms, so the inner wall and the space behind it are visible almost in full. Second, the edge of an arm catches the light markedly and separates itself from the darker background. An injection-molded wheel carries such thin elements only with difficulty, because a mold needs draft angles and the material has to flow right into the tip.

The variant without shoes

The package contains the discs alone. That is practical if you are building a car with fender extensions and want to keep your freedom in choosing the width of the tire, which with such conversions differs from car to car.

Painting

Forged wheels tend to be in a natural or graphite shade with a polished face of the arms. The simplest route leads through a dark coat over the whole area and the subsequent polishing of the edges with a soft graphite pencil. The effect is stronger when the polishing is done only after a matte varnish has dried, because it holds the pigment better than a smooth gloss.

Try the hub dry before the paint, and with greater clearance pack it out with a thin strip of plastic.
