This is a set of self-adhesive masking templates for a plastic model of the F6F-5 Hellcat fighter in 1:24 scale. The masks are pre-cut to the shape of the parts, so when painting there is no measuring, tracing or cutting of frames out of masking tape. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory used when painting one. The cut is based on the Airfix kit; on a model from another maker the set need not fit.
This set is single-sided, that is it masks the glazing from the outer face. That is the usual and perfectly sufficient approach on models where the cockpit frames are not painted from within or where there is not much view into the interior. Alongside it the manufacturer also makes a double-sided variant, which allows the frames to be sprayed with interior color from within as well. The single-sided one is the simpler and quicker route to sharp frame edges.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was an American carrier-based fighter of the Second World War, of rugged construction with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine. The F6F-5 was the late and most widespread variant. In 1:24 scale the model is large, so every inaccuracy on the cockpit frames shows at once and accurate templates save a great deal of frustration.
Wash and degrease the clear part, or the mask will not hold. Lay the templates down with tweezers and press them over their whole area, above all at the edges. Apply the paint in several thin coats, because one heavy coat gets under an edge more easily than three light ones. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried and pull it sideways back over itself, not straight up. Correct small runs with a wooden stick moistened in water.
The masks are an accessory for painting a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
