A louvered screen over the engine bay of the small Fiat in the F version, in 1:24 scale and with a shape derived from the Japanese Tamiya kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The small Fiat carried a two-cylinder at the rear and cooled it with air drawn in through a grille under the rear window. Owners and racing shops therefore added louvered screens over the engine lid, partly for the airflow and partly because they made the car look sharper. The best known are the conversions from the Abarth workshop, where the lid was even left propped open on a stay so that the engine could breathe better.
The accessory brings this element for a build in 1:24. These are thin horizontal slats which on the real car have the thickness of sheet metal; molding them from a tool so that they stay crisp and open between one another is practically impossible.
The piece is prepared for the Japanese Tamiya kit. It seats on the area behind the rear window, which it is a good idea to level with abrasive paper beforehand, so that the screen does not rest on the edges alone. Paint it separately from the body: paint otherwise collects between the slats and the fine detail is flooded.
On its own it is a small thing and will not transform a model. Combined with other changes at the rear, that is with the exhaust, the wheels and a livery, it will however move the Fiat from a series city car toward the sharper form the examples raced on Italian circuits in the 1960s had. Anyone building an ordinary series example will reach for it rather as a period accessory, because the 500 was commonly modified this way at the time. The accessory can also be combined with series paint and chromed bumpers without the result looking incongruous; the overall effect of the model decides more than any individual piece.
