The cannon mark moved the Hurricane from the role of a fighter into the role of an attacker of ground targets. A Merlin of the twentieth series, four barrels in the wing and the ability to carry bombs or drop tanks made it a machine that proved itself in Burma, over the Mediterranean and in night intruder work. The structure of the fuselage with its fabric covering over a steel truss had not changed since the middle of the 1930s and in the field it turned out to be an advantage, because a torn covering could be sewn up on the spot.
British national insignia are concentric circles and that means work in several rounds. The key is registration: before the first mask is peeled off, note two reference points in pencil on the paint beside the marking, by which the next layer is settled exactly concentrically. Even a shift of half a millimeter is visible in a large scale as an eccentricity of the circle. Let the paint go off properly between the individual colors, or what is underneath will lift when the next mask is applied. And spray thinly, because every layer raises the step at the border, and with concentric circles the steps add up.
