A set of ten Israeli army plastic cans in the version for diesel. A scale miniature of a 20-liter container just under fifteen millimeters tall, with molded ribbing, a handle and a neck cap. An add-on for furnishing the basket, the side plates and the rear of a tracked or wheeled vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
For field containers the Israeli army moved from sheet metal to plastic and told the contents apart by the color of the container. This set brings ten cans in the version for diesel, that is for the fuel on which the vast majority of tracked and wheeled hardware ran. The subject is the ordinary 20-liter container of the kind crews hung on the rear baskets, on the side plates of the hull and on the free lugs along the body.
The real container measures just under half a meter in height. After reduction to 1:35 what comes out of it is a shape roughly fourteen millimeters tall, ten wide and five thick. That is the size of a bean, and this is precisely where it is decided what is worth making as a casting and what is not. The X-shaped reinforcing ribs, the handle shaped for three fingers and the screw cap of the neck are still legible at this size and the eye finds them on a model. The embossed lettering and the liter marks, by contrast, are lost altogether, because their depth would have to be less than a thousandth of a millimeter.
Ten pieces mean ten separate cuts and ten moments when a part jumps out of the nippers and lands somewhere under the table. It pays to work over a mat with a raised edge, to hold the parts with flat-jawed tweezers and to remove the casting nub with a saw rather than with pliers. Before painting it is worth washing the containers in lukewarm soapy water, because the rest of the mold release agent works its way out from under the coat in time.
The cans are among the elements that give hardware a lived-in look. They do not have to sit in a row as if in a store; on the contrary, an uneven arrangement and one container laid flat do the scene a bigger service than a regular file.
