A free-standing cooler for compressed air for builders of car models in 1:24 scale. It completes a turbocharged engine with a part that is usually missing from boxed kits of production cars. The brand Yamamoto Model Parts makes several shape variants marked with letters, so that a modeler can choose according to the room available behind the bumper.
An intercooler cools the air that the turbocharger has compressed and thereby heated. Cooler air is denser, so more of it fits into the cylinder and the engine runs more reliably. In construction it is a core with thin fins and two end tanks at the sides, to which the pipework from the turbo and into the intake is connected. On tuned cars the intercooler often moves forward, into the airflow behind the grille, where it is clearly visible on a model.
First wash the part in lukewarm water with dish soap, as resin castings carry remains of mold release agent from the mold and the paint does not hold on them otherwise. On intercoolers the casting block tends to run along the longer edge; separate it with a fine-toothed saw and level the surface with a file in such a way that the fins do not get rounded. Then comes the most important step, the one that is often forgotten: dry-fitting. The cooler is tall and the front part of the kit usually has to be modified for it, as the bumper grille gets cut open, the lower brace gets sanded away or material is taken off the back of a plastic part so that the cooler sits down. Take a little at a time and keep trying it. Only then glue it, with super glue, ideally the gel kind. The core looks good in a dark aluminum, the tanks at the sides a shade lighter.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. The part is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and pipework are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
