Die-cut self-adhesive masks for the kit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 in 1:24 scale from Trumpeter. Inside there are two masks for the glazing, one for the outer and one for the inner side of the cockpit canopy, and beside them three masks for the national insignia.
The Luftwaffe wore the so-called bar cross. It is not a single shape: it has a dark core, a light border around it and on some machines a thin outline along the outer perimeter as well. That is precisely why it comes out better with a mask than with a decal. First the light layer is laid down, it is covered with a narrower mask and the dark center is added. At an enlargement such as 1:24 scale, a decal gives away every step under the edge of the carrier film and on a doubly curved surface it wrinkles easily.
The G-6 was the most numerous version of the whole family and was recognized by two prominent fairings ahead of the cockpit, which the crews called bulges. They covered the larger breeches of the heavier fuselage machine guns. The machine flew from 1943 on every front, from the Mediterranean to the defense of German airspace, and in the same period the markings on the lower surface of the wings began to lose their light filling so that a fighter would glare less from above.
The shape of the masks is based on a particular kit, so it need not fit a part of different origin. It is good to degrease the surface in advance and to press the edge of the mask down with a wooden stick so that the paint does not bleed under it. It is applied in two passes and very thinly, because a heavy coat creates a ridge under the edge which stays visible even after clear coating.
