About product

Nissan R30 Skyline Turbo Kyalami 9H Endurance in 1:24 scale (Aoshima)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the circuit Nissan Skyline of the R30 generation with a turbocharged engine, in the specification for the nine-hour endurance race at Kyalami in South Africa in 1982. The scale is 1:24 and the maker is the Japanese firm Aoshima. The SD designation at the end of the name is one Aoshima uses on other boxes in its range as well.

The real subject

The R30 generation Skyline was built from 1981, and in its turbo version it was among the most technically interesting Japanese cars of the day. The circuit racing standard received markedly flared fenders, front and rear downforce features, a stripped interior with a roll cage and wider tires on racing wheels. The nine-hour race at Kyalami was a prestigious endurance event at the time, which Japanese works teams also entered. The car is a typical example of the era when a production base was worked up into silhouette racing form.

Building and painting tips

With a circuit car, how it sits on its wheels decides everything. The wide tires have to sit in the flared fenders with the same gap left and right, so fit the axles dry first and check by eye from behind and from ahead. Leave yourself room for correction and only then glue. The ride height on these boxes is usually set by the shape of the parts; if your model stands high, it can be lowered by shortening the axle pins, but carefully and symmetrically. Paint the wheels separately, lighten the matte black on the tires with gray and sand the tread lightly so that it loses the shine of the mold. Finally, dust the tire sidewalls a little, otherwise they look new off the shelf.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese circuit cars of the 1980s
  • Modelers who build silhouette and endurance racers
  • Anyone interested in 1:24 scale and racing subjects
  • More experienced builders who will watch the stance of the wheels

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
