Self-adhesive masks for the cockpit glazing of the Supermarine Spitfire of the early Mk I and Mk V versions in 1:24 scale. They contain pieces for both sides of the glazing; the model is bought separately.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk I was the form with which the British squadrons entered the Battle of Britain. The elliptical wing, the Merlin engine and eight 7.7 millimeter machine guns made up equipment that proved sufficient against the opponents of the time. The Mk V version then came in 1941, was given a stronger Merlin 45 and in many cases a pair of cannon as well. Despite the differences under the skin, the shape of the forward part of the fuselage and of the cockpit canopy stayed practically the same on both versions, and that is why one set of masks can serve both. In all, over twenty thousand examples of all versions were built and the type stayed in production throughout the war, which among the fighters of that time is an exception.
The shapes follow the framing of the windscreen, the sliding section and the fixed part behind the pilot. Covering from the outside and the inside is given, so pieces for the inner side are in the package too. The inner pieces are stuck on before the canopy is joined to the fuselage, otherwise the hand can no longer reach them.
The envelope does not contain the round national insignia or the bands for the wings, even though it is precisely these shapes that tend to be the greatest painting challenge on British aircraft. Anyone who wants to spray them needs another set or a compass cutter. The same goes for machine numbers and squadron code letters. On large models it is worth applying the paint of the frames very thinly, because a heavy layer reveals a sharp step once the film is lifted off, exactly in the place where the eye expects a smooth transition from glass to frame.
